Ken Earnhardt suggested we start a discussion on the use of videos with real estate websites.

My experience is somewhat limited, but I will share my one video project with you. This video was shot from my dashboard traveling down Beach Boulevard in Orange Beach, Alabama.

The video was made with a Flip Mino which I bought at Best Buy for less than $150.00. The little device has very few buttons and very few menu items making it unbelievably easy to operate.

The device holds one hour of video. The video can be uploaded by simply plugging the whole device into a USB port. It is that easy!

I uploaded to Youtube and found that the quality was somewhat less than what I had hoped for due to the compression technology they use for file transfers. I later found out that for a few bucks I could download a program called DivX which uses the DivX compression codecs and makes for a very high quality upload. In fact, it is possible to upload HD - High Definition Quality videos to youtube with the software. The video posted above was compressed with DivX.

I had great ideas how I was going to utilize this new tool. The only problem is again, there just aren't enough hours in the day!

In regard to Ken's suggestion on the subject of using videos on real estate sites:
My own preference is going to be targeting Condominium Complexes and Subdivisions more so than being specific to a single property. I have some great ideas and look forward to having a chance to implement them as the daylight length gets longer.

Adding to the conversation though, my friend Rob Masse in Tampa does a fine job of using video in his business. He states he sells real estate by not trying to sell real estate. Rob streams live video from his Iphone many times a day - anything from what he is having for lunch to actually streaming walk throughs of property for investor buyers 3000 miles away and streaming home inspections to those buyers as well.

Rob also co-produces an interesting show called Frankly Speaking that is streamed live as well.

Cal,
Great comments on the subject! One of the things I like about the Flip camera is it is convenient to carry so that you can capture events as they happen or as you are inspired. I would suggest that you video the Condo Complex and the Subdivisions as a "neighborhood video". You could then post it to free sites like YouTube and ViewThisHome . When I use my Flip video camera I produce the movie with the Flip software in its entirety without any editing. Then I import the video into Windows Movie Maker to do the editing. It is much easier to add voice over and music in this format. The first thing I do is look at the video and then decide what I want to talk about in the voice over. I then write my script without concern for where I am in the video. I then record the script and edit the video to fit the script. I know it sounds time consuming but once you get the hang of it it goes very quickly. Here is an example of a "news story" I produced about a plane making an emergency landing on the beach in front of our beach house.
Let's talk about the different ways to use video and tricks and techniques people are using to make the process more user friendly. I would like comments about slide shows also. They are much easier to produce and the quality can be better if the pictures are of higher quality.
Also, Cal, load up your video on ViewThisHome and I think you will find the streaming is better than YouTube and if you don't agree then let me know.
